The series is one of the best things I’ve ever read, but I wish it was better. It is everything that Game of Thrones should have been. Abercrombie’s writing is as crisp and intentional as anyone short of Tolkien. He tells a masterful story. As genres go, this would be grimdark fantasy, and that’s where it collapses.
Humanism fails because it has nothing redeeming to offer. There’s not a single positive, redeeming character within the covers of these books. Everyone looks to their own interests and offers nothing to any other character. They learn after a fashion, but none are better at the end of the story than at the beginning.
